The USC Upstate track and field team will resume full action on Saturday, April 11, when they will travel a short 30 miles to compete at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
The Spartans did not compete last weekend, with the exception of six of the Upstate distance athletes, who traveled to Raleigh on Friday to compete in the 5k and 10k events at the Duke Invitational. The Upstate squads will be coming into Saturday's meet with two solid weeks of practice since the Winthrop Invitational on March 27-28, hungry to break more school records and to continue to set the bar to new heights for the program.
The Spartans will compete with A-Sun Conference rival, ETSU, at the Furman Invitational, along with other local schools including Wofford, The Citadel, Davidson, Appalachian State and the College of Charleston.
Perrish Goggins currently leads all A-Sun competitors in the men's high jump and long jump events with respective scores of 6-06.75 (2 meters) and 23-00.50 (7.02 meters), while Justin Crawford leads all men in the pole vault with a score of 14-07.25 (4.45 meters).
Emily Tangwar currently holds the second-place spots in conference competition in the women's 800-meter and 5,000-meter events, with respective times of 2:17.75 and 17:24.30, while Jemeli Sang holds the third-place spot in the 3,000-meters in 10:33.51.
Saturday's meet will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's 110-meter hurdles, with the hurdle, sprinting and short-distance events continuing through 5:45 p.m. and closing with the 1,600-meter relay. The field events are slated to begin at 1 p.m. with the men's hammer throw and concluding with the women's triple jump at 4:30 p.m. The distance running events will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:20 p.m.
Saturday's results will be available following completion of the meet at www.furmanpaladins.com.
