Piscataway, N.J. – The USC Upstate women's golf team joined the other 19 teams in the Rutgers Invitational in battling cold and windy conditions Friday, and the weather won the battle as the first round of the tournament was halted due to darkness with three teams remaining on the course.
Upstate was one of 17 teams to finish the first round, but with teams remaining on the course, the first round results were not released. The Spartans finished the round with a 334, which was one of the better scores to come in during the round. The three teams yet to finish their first round will hit the course early Saturday morning with the second round commencing immediately at the conclusion of the first.
The weather was a major factor in the scores soaring upward. The temperature peaked at 52 degrees, but a sustained 18 mph wind with gusts to 30 mph made the course play longer and more difficult.
Spartanburg's Taylor Pleier led the Upstate cause on the day, finishing with a 79. Rachel Lewis (Llansihen, Wales) carded an 83, while Amanda Hall (Fort Mill, S.C.) and Summer Wall (Chesnee, S.C.) opened with 86. Johanna Ebenhag (Gothenberg, Sweden) tallied a 92 to round out the scoring.
"The team grinded it out all day long," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Through the first 15 holes, it looked like we might shoot 10 strokes better than what we did. But, the final three holes played so long and were very difficult. We gave some shots back on those three holes in very tough conditions.
"I am proud of Taylor. She played as well as most anyone in the tournament today. You can't say enough about Summer and what she has done this year. She has really stepped into a leadership role and is our most improved player."
