Rock Hill, S.C. – Amanda Hall fired a 76 in the final round of the Winthrop Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon to claim the first top 10 finish of her career and lead the USC Upstate women's golf team to a fifth-place finish.
Hall, a freshman from Tega Cay, S.C., followed up a 79 on Saturday with a 76 on Sunday to move into a tie for 10th in the tournament. It marked her best finish of the season and her best 36-hole total, bettering her old personal best by one stroke. Her effort, along with Rachel Lewis (Fr., Llanishen, Wales) and Summer Wall (Sr., Chesnee, S.C.), helped move Upstate up one position on the leaderboard to finish fifth.
Upstate got birdies from Hall and Lewis on the 18th hole to secure fifth by a stroke over Towson. Lewis also shot 76 on the day, while Wall turned in her career-best round with an 82.
"This was a good team effort today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I'm really proud of the contribution Summer made in posting her lowest career score. Her efforts and Amanda and Rachel making birdie on 18 helped us move up on the leaderboard. We haven't seen that a lot lately and it feels good."
Upstate shot its second straight round of 316 to finish with a 632 total to finish fifth. The Spartans finished one stroke ahead of Towson (633) and two ahead of The Citadel (634). The fifth-place finish is an indication of the improvement the Spartans have made since the season-opening tournament at the TPC Sawgrass.
"We've set goals to improve and in so many ways, we have," said Lawton. "We have achieved several personal and school records and the team's attitude is very relaxed and positive. (Assistant) Coach (Sandy) Halkett and I have spoken to the team about viewing each shot as an opportunity and to always be aggressive and trust it. Confidence is a must and we are starting to get there."
Radford turned in a 309 total to take the team championship with a 610 total. Wofford finished second at 615 and was followed by Gardner-Webb (622), Winthrop (623), Upstate (632), Towson (633), The Citadel (634), Presbyterian College (641) and St. Francis (672). Wofford's Anne Marie Covar shot a 3-under-par 69 to win the individual championship by seven strokes.
Lewis' 76 allowed her to move up to tie for 17th in the tournament with a 157 total. Taylor Pleier (Fr., Spartanburg) shot 82 on Sunday and finished tied for 20th with a 158 total. Wall claimed a tie for 39th with a 167 total, while Johanna Ebenhag (Sr., Gothenberg, Sweden) finished with a 173 total.
