DeLand, Fla. – Rachel Lewis lowered her score by five strokes from the first round to the second and is the low-Spartan to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team at the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic Monday afternoon at the Victoria Hills Country Club.
Lewis, a freshman from Llanishen, Wales, opened the tournament with an 84, then rallied to post a 79 in the second round, bettering her score by five strokes. She stands tied for 30th with a 163 total.
Lewis led the Upstate attack on the day. The Spartans turned in rounds of 337 and 334 to post a 36-hole total of 671. They are eighth in the nine-team field heading into Tuesday's final round. Upstate is just eight shots out of seventh.
Jacksonville State and Daytona State are tied atop the team leaderboard with 593 totals. Stetson is third at 599 and is followed by Florida Atlantic (613), McNeese State (625), Florida Gulf Coast (630), Bethune-Cookman (663), Upstate (671) and Lipscomb (680).
"The course is pretty tight and there are over 100 bunkers. We found a lot of them today which caused the scores to go higher than what we have had lately," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "Four of our five players have never played here before, so that contributed to the scores as well. I think we are going to get better each round and I expect our scores to improve tomorrow. I saw some good things from each player today. We just have to keep working hard to be more consistent."
Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg) and Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) are tied for 34th as the second-lowest Spartans in the tournament. They turned in rounds of 83 and 84 for a 167 total. Summer Wall (Chesnee, S.C.) carded rounds of 86 and 92 as the fourth-best Upstate player. She stands 41st. Freshman Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) is 43rd after rounds of 95 and 88, cutting seven strokes off of her morning round.
