Spartans Close Out Fall Season With 8th-Place Finish At Hatter Classic

DeLand, Fla. – USC Upstate lowered its team score in its second-straight round and closed out the fall season with an eighth-place finish at the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic Wednesday afternoon.
Upstate shot a 329 on Tuesday, eight shots lower than the 337 in the first round and five shots better than the 334 in the second. The Spartans finished with a 54-hole total of 1,000 to finish eighth in the tournament ahead of A-Sun foe Lipscomb (1,018). The difference in Tuesday's round was playing steadier golf from the start. Upstate began the final round 15 strokes better through nine holes than what it posted in Monday's first round.
"The way we started today and the way we started yesterday was a lot different," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "We came out of the gates playing well. Unfortunately, we had some big numbers creep onto the scorecards. I think with each round getting better, the players know what they are capable of doing. There is no reason while we can't post four countable scores in the 70's as we move forward. This is the course we will play in the conference championships, so it was a good way of getting experience."
Spartanburg's Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg) shot the lowest round of the day for Upstate, carding a 79. She finished with a 246 total and in a tie for 31st. Rachel Lewis (Llanishen, Wales) claimed the top finish in the tournament for Upstate, finishing tied for 29th with a 245 total. She shot an 82 in the final round. Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) was 37th with a 251 total and an 84 on Tuesday. Summer Wall (Chesnee, S.C.) shot an 84 in the final round and finished 41st (262), while Madison Bryant finished 44th with a 278 total.
Stetson, the host of the tournament, claimed the tournament championship in a playoff with Daytona State. Both clubs shot 893 for the tournament. Jacksonville State was third at 894 and was followed by Florida Atlantic (919), McNeese State (939), Florida Gulf Coast (945), Bethune-Cookman (984), Upstate (1,000) and Lipscomb (1,018).
