Sedona, Ariz. - USC Upstate fired an opening round 350 and stands 18th heading into the final round of the Red Rocks Invitational played at the Oak Creek Country Club Saturday afternoon.
Upstate began the round steady, but began to falter as the winds picked up and gusted above 30 mph. The Spartans trail North Dakota State by six strokes for 17th place and are just 10 shots out of a top 15 finish.
Jennifer Judge and Johanna Ebenhag each opened the tournament by shooting 86. Cheryl Lo carded an 88, while Marrisa Clontz and Natalie Buch turned in rounds of 90 and 95.
"It was a beautiful start, weather-wise," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "Then, halfway through the round the winds picked up. They were steady at over 20 mph and gusted to nearly 40 mph. With the wind, it got very cold. Still, there is no excuse for three-putting greens and making poor decisions.
"JoJo (Johanna Ebenhag) was steady all day. She posted one big number and a double bogey on a par-3. But, other than those two holes, she was pretty solid. As a team, the greens gave everyone a hard time. The speed and breaks were difficult to get a grip on. With rain and snow in the forecast for tonight, it might play into our favor. We are used to playing in those conditions with all of the bad weather we have had back home."
Cal Poly opened the tournament with a 307 to take a five stroke lead over Northern Arizona (312). Eastern Michigan and Montana stand tied at third after carding 320 on the day and are followed by Western New Mexico (322), Portland (322), UC Riverside (322), Xavier (323), Western Michigan (329), Cal State Bakersfield (330), Louisiana Monroe (331), Grand Canyon (332), Montana State (333), Utah Valley (339), Northern Colorado (340), Southern Utah (341), North Dakota State (344) and Upstate (350).
Cal Poly's Kristin Locke and Northern Arizona's Aleah Kim opened the tournament with 75 to share the lead heading into the final round Sunday. The pair have a one stroke lead over three players at 76.
