
Spartans Wrap-up Final Day of 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The USC Upstate track and field team continued to break records as two school marks fell on the final day of the 49er Classic.
Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) became the first Spartan to post a time of under two minutes in the 800-meter run (1:59.42). His time, that placed him 30th-overall, broke the previous time of 2:00.24 which was held by Joe Holzinger. Dustin Thomas (Harrisonburg, N.C./Hickory Ridge) also competed in the event, finishing 65th with a time of 2:10.11.
David Dennison (Carlisle, Pa./Carlislie) set a new school record in the 3000-meter run. Dennsion, who finished ninth, posted a time of 8:52.80, surpassing the old mark of 9:12.21 held by Matt Henderson. Christian Ritacco (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) finished 17th in the event after a time of 9:11.34.
In the women's 800-meter run, Carolyne Chelulei (Eldoret, Kenya/Alliance Girls) finished eighth after an event time of 2:19.22. Her time was less than two seconds off of the school record of 2:17.75 held by Emily Tangwar.
Abigail Osborne (Abbeville, S.C./Abbeville) posted an eighth place finish in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.50m. In the shot put, Gabrielle Walker (Chattanooga, Tenn./Mars Hill) finished 18th after a throw of 10.25m. Meanwhile, LaTerrica Blocker (Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan) finished 28th in the shot put after recording a throw of 9.53m.
In the pole vault, Justin Crawford (Elgin, S.C./Lugoff-Elgin) finished fourth after clearing a height of 4.15m. Eric Chapman (Cowpens, S.C./Broome) finished 22nd in the discus with a throw of 33.74m.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend. Upstate's schedule changed slightly as the team will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic rahter than the Weems Baskin Relays in Columbia, N.C. Part of the team will still head to the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
