Duke Invitational Results (Day One)
DURHAM, N.C. - The USC Upstate track and field team received quality performances as three school records fell on Friday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium on day one of the Duke Invitational.
David Dennison (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) became the first Spartan to ever complete the 1,500-meter run in less than four minutes. Dennison, who finished 13th, finished the race in 3:57.55 and was less than two seconds away from posting a top-10 finish. The freshman broke his own school-record of 4:03.46 that he set at last weekend's Catamount Classic.
Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) finished the 1,500-meter run in 4:05.31 as he finished 45th. Dylan Taylor (Woodruff, S.C./Woodruff) also competed in the event and he recorded a time of 4:40.42.
Eric Chapman (Cowpens, S.C./Broome) set a new program mark in the hammer throw as he finished 19th. With a throw of 157-03.00 (47.93m), Chapman broke Marc Wartenberger's mark of 155-04.00 (47.34m) that was set at last season's Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships.
James Jackson (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) broke the school-record as he finished 13th in the 10,000-meter run. His time of 33:09.06 surpasses the old mark of 33:14.07, which was set by Matt Henderson at last season's Duke Invitational. Henderson (Inman, S.C./Dorman) finished 19th at this year's meet after completing the race in 34:12.75.
In the women's 1,500-meter run, Carolyne Chelulei (Eldoret, Kenya/Alliance Girls) finished 11th with a time of 4:41.12. Chelulei finished ahead of Campbell's Rachel Deline (4:41.43).
Danny Moore (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) raced to a 23rd-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.77. That time was less than half a second off of the program record he set last weekend.
Upstate will return to action tomorrow as it competes in the second and final day of the Duke Invitational.
