Spartans Ready for First Outdoor Meet in South Carolina

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Coming off a strong showing at last weekend's Duke Invitational in which eight school records were broken, the track and field team will travel to Greenville on Saturday for the Furman Invitational.
Last season the track and field team had a strong showing at the Furman Invitational as four Spartans won individual events. Emily Tangwar (Eldoret, Kenya/Lareto) won the 1,500-meter run in 4:45.46. On the men's side, Eric Chapman (Cowpens, S.C./Broome) won the hammer throw with a mark of 45.38m. Perrish Goggins (Columbia, S.C./C.A. Johnson) won the high jump (6-04.00), while Justin Crawford won the pole vault after a height of 15-00.00.
At last weekend's Duke Invitational, David Dennison (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) led the Spartan charge as he set two individual records and was part of the 4x400 relay team that set a new record. In the 1,500-meter run, Dennison became the first Spartan in program history to complete the event in less than four minutes as he finished 13th with a time of 3:57.55.
In the 800-meter run, the freshman set a new mark of 1:58.14 as he finished 18th in the event. His final record of the Duke Invitational came he ran the 4x400m relay with Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla./Niceville), Danny Moore (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and Michael Meissner (Cottage Grove, Minn./UW-River Falls). The Spartan quartet completed the event in 3:27.05, which broke the old record by more than four seconds.
Other Spartans breaking records last weekend included Eric Chapman, Justin Crawford, James Jackson (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) and Abigail Osborne (Abbeville, S.C./Abbeville).
Following this weekend's event, Upstate will return to action on April 17th for the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
