Spartans to Host A-Sun Leading Dolphins Friday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After dropping a pair of conference matches over the weekend, the USC Upstate women's soccer team returns home to face Jacksonville Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Dolphins enter the weekend atop the A-Sun standings with a 3-0-1 mark (10 points) and the Spartans trail the all-time series, 0-4-0.
Following Friday night's tilt, the Spartans entertain former Peach Belt and current A-Sun foe, North Florida Sunday at 2 p.m. The Ospreys own a 7-4-1 record in the all-time series.
Quick Kicks…
• Maegan Garner scored her first collegiate goal on Sept. 25 against VMI. Garner's goal in the 80th-minute proved to be the game-winner as Upstate rallied for the 3-2 victory.
• Rachel Carr scored her first goal in a Spartan uniform in the 12th-minute against VMI (Sept. 25). Carr returned to the pitch against Winthrop (Sept. 9) after suffering an injury during warmups in the exhibition match against SMC (Aug. 16).
• Michelle Calmeyn didn't find the back of the net, but she assisted on two of Upstate's goals against VMI. (Sept. 25) She assisted on Rachel Carr's goal in the 12th-minute and Courtney Mack's game-tying goal in the 74th-minute.
• Michelle Calmeyn recorded a hat trick (32', 64', 66') against Alabama State on Sept. 11. It was the first hat trick in nearly 10 years and just the third in program history (Thea Moen, Sept. 8, 2001, vs. Mars Hill; Thea Moen, Oct. 23, 2001, vs. Clayton State).
• Katelyn Allen scored what proved to be the game-winner against Alabama State when she scored on a header off of Kayli Moore's corner kick in the 28th-minute.
Looking Back at Lipscomb
Despite owning a 9-8 advantage in shots, the USC Upstate women's soccer team fell on the road to Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Lipscomb registered the first shot on the contest in the 14th-minute and the Lady Bisons broke through in the 18th-minute. Danielle Bethke scored her first goal of the season on a cross from Kirsten Heikkinen, putting Lipscomb in front, 1-0.
Less than three minutes later, the Lady Bisons took a 2-0 advantage as Meghan McGuire scored on a pass from Danielle Bethke.
Upstate recorded its first shot of the contest in the 35th-minute, a header attempt by Michelle Calmeyn. The only other Spartan shot in the first half came off of the foot of Calmeyn in the 40th-minute; however, the freshman's shot sailed high.
The Spartan attack came alive in the second half as the squad registered seven shots and five on-goal. Unfortunately for Upstate, Lipscomb's Zerio was there to thwart every opportunity by the Spartans.
In the match, Sarah Plantz and Rachel Collins split time between the pipes and combined for three saves, while Zerio recorded five saves for the Lady Bisons.
Each team was whistled offsides twice with the Spartans committing 13 fouls compared to 10 for the Lady Bisons.
Looking Back at Belmont
Belmont's Dani Stolt took a pass from Taylor Smith and beat Spartan goalkeeper Rachel Collins to score the lone goal of the match, propelling the Bruins to the one-goal victory.
Less than 50 seconds after Stolt's goal, Upstate freshman Michelle Calmeyn had a chance to tie the match at 1-1, but her shot sailed wide.
Collins, who faced a total of 11 shots in the first half, made five saves to keep the Spartan deficit at just one goal at halftime.
In the 73rd-minute, Katrina Savoy's shot sailed wide, allowing the Bruins to maintain their 1-0 advantage. The Spartans' final chance to notch the equalizer came in the 80th-minute, but Rachel Carr's shot sailed wide of the post.
Belmont led the way in shots (19-3), shots on-goal (9-0) and corner kicks (2-0). Collins tallied a total of eight saves Friday night. The Spartans committed 12 fouls in the match while the Bruins had five fouls and four offsides penalties.
