
Spartan Volleyball Closes Out Season with A-Sun Pair

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team wraps up the 2011 campaign with a pair of home Atlantic Sun Conference matches, hosting Belmont Friday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. and Lipscomb Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.
The Competition:
The Bruins hold a 7-0 advantage over the Spartans in the all-time series, including a 3-0 mark at the Hodge Center. Earlier this season, Upstate dropped a 3-0 decision at Belmont Oct. 1.
Upstate squares off with A-Sun opponent Lipscomb for the second time this season Saturday in the last match for the Spartans this season. The Bisons lead the all-time series 7-0, including a 3-0 record at the Hodge. Lipscomb beat the Spartans in Nashville, Tenn., 3-0 Sept. 30.
Spartan Leaders:
Senior Morgan Thomas and junior Mindy Quimby lead the Spartans with 307 and 209 kills, respectively. Junior Emily Sanders has dished out 792 assists, averaging 8.16 per set this season. Defensively, sophomore Morgan Page has a team-best with 436 digs, followed by Sanders with 325. Thomas leads the defensive charge at the net with 62 total blocks on the season, while freshman Kayla McAvoy tallies 49.
Record Watch:
Sanders is the A-Sun's active leader in career-assists with 2,390. She ranks third in Upstate history, passing Morgan Bucciferro's (2006-09) fourth-place mark of 2,279.
Thomas registered her 1,000th career-kill Nov. 2 at N.C. Central. She has 1,029 career-kills, ranking third among conference active career-kill leaders. The senior is also making record waves on defense as well. Thomas is ninth all-time in Upstate history with 311 total career-blocks, passing Kendall Harper's (1998-01) mark of 309 career-blocks. The senior ranks fourth all-time in career-block assists at Upstate with 238, just five shy of Sara Henrichs' third-place mark of 243.
