
Spartans Make Big Turnaround at Kiawah Island Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team rebounded with the biggest turnaround in the tournament, cutting 33 strokes off of its team score from Sunday's first round to shoot a 317 in the second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic Monday afternoon.
On Sunday, Upstate struggled to find any consistency and turned in a 350 team score. On Monday, Upstate not only hit the ball well, but also cut down on its strokes on and around the greens to post a 317. The next closest turnaround on the day was made by Old Dominion which cut 26 strokes off of its score. The tournament will conclude with the final round on Tuesday.
Upstate remained in 32nd place in the 33-team field, but picked up ground on a few teams in the standings. The Spartans own a 36-hole total of 667. The Spartans picked up four strokes on Winthrop and trail the Eagles by just five shots heading into the final round. Upstate is just six shots back of Drake in 30th and 10 back of The Citadel at 657. The Spartans are 105 strokes ahead of Faulkner.
Miami was one of just four teams to shoot a sub-300 score on Monday and took sole possession of first place in the tournament. The Hurricanes own a 593 36-hole total and lead by seven strokes over Campbell (600). Florida International and Western Carolina are tied for third at 601 and are followed in the top 10 by the College of Charleston (604), Akron (608), Central Arkansas (609), Nebraska (609), Oral Roberts (610) and Elon (610).
Upstate managed its 317 on Monday after posting two scores in the 70s. Rachel Lewis (LLanishen, Wales) continued to lead the way for Upstate, finishing with a 76 on Monday to follow an 83 on Sunday. She moved up and into a tie for 84th with a 159 total. She advanced 29 positions on the leaderboard. Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished with a 79 on Monday after posting a 92 on Sunday, bettering her score by 13 strokes. She owns a 171 total.
Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) is the second-lowest Spartan in the tournament, totaling 166 after an 80 on Monday. Johanna Ebenhag (Gothenberg, Sweden) is tied with Pleier at 171 after carding an 82 Tuesday, while Marissa Clontz (Greenville, S.C.) owns a 187 total.
Campbell's Sarah Bejgrowicz entered the day tied for the lead at 3-under-par. She totaled a 71 on Tuesday to take sole possession of the tournament lead at 4-under. There are four players under-par after 36 holes.
