Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Freshman Amanda Hall shot a final round 81 and claimed a top 25 individual finish, but the USC Upstate women's golf team struggled overall and finished 14th at the Lowcountry Intercollegiate Monday afternoon on the South Course at Moss Creek Golf Club.
Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) opened the tournament with an 83 on Sunday and lowered her score by two strokes on Monday to finish with a 164 total. She finished tied for 25th.
"Amanda played a nice round of golf," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "She displayed a well thought-out game of golf. Her putting was terrific. Even though she missed some greens, her short game came through to save shots."
While Hall turned in a strong tournament, Upstate, as a team, struggled in the final round. The Spartans began the day in ninth place in the 14-team field, but shot a 354 on Monday to fall five spots into 14th for the tournament. The 354 was 20 strokes higher than Sunday's opening-round 334. Upstate was one of four teams whose scores rose from the first to the second round.
Appalachian State won the tournament with a 616 total, finishing nine strokes ahead of Samford at 625. Wofford was third with a 640 total and was followed by Gardner-Webb (644), Savannah College of Art & Design (646), Richmond (651), Presbyterian College (651), Western Kentucky (654), Radford (661), Winthrop (670), Brown (675), Tennessee Tech (684), The Citadel (686) and Upstate (688).
Rachel Lewis (Llanishen, Wales) shot the second-lowest score on the day, an 87, and finished with a 171 total and in a tie for 53rd. Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished with an 89 and in a tie for 58th, while Johanna Ebenhag (Gothenberg, Sweden) and Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) finished 68th and 73rd.
Appalachian State's Yue Xu shot a final round 73 to finish with a 147 total and win the individual championship as the Mountaineers took the top three spots in the tournament.
