SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Junior Perrish Goggins, who was part of the USC Upstate track and field squad that set nine new school marks this past weekend at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, AL., claimed the Atlantic Sun's Athlete of the Week award for track and field, announced the league on Wednesday.
The Columbia, S.C., native broke two school records last weekend, shattering his previous standard by seven-and-a-half inches in the triple jump by posting a leap of 45-10.75. That impressive leap allowed Goggins to finish 10th overall in the event, and shatter the previous mark of 45-03.27, which he set at the 2009 A-Sun Championships.
Goggins established his other new school standard in the long jump, also eclipsing a mark which he set at the 2009 A-Sun Outdoor Championships. With a leaping distance of 23.01.75, not only did Goggins break his previously established standard (23-01.25) by half an inch, he also managed a third-place overall finish in an event that featured BCS conference competitors from the ACC and SEC.
Goggins' school record-setting leap in the long jump this past weekend, ranks as the second mark in the A-Sun this season, trailing only Campbell's Diego Lawrence, who sports a leap of 24-09.25. Goggins' mark in the triple jump at the Tiger Track Classic ranks him fifth overall in the A-Sun this season in that particular event.
The information management and systems major redshirted last season, but claimed three medals at the 2009 A-Sun Outdoor Championships, including individual titles in both the long-jump and high-jump, while also claiming third in the triple-jump. Goggins was the first Upstate athlete to ever win a conference field athlete of the week award back during the 2009 outdoor season after his performances at Wofford and Furman. His second weekly award comes nearly exactly two years removed from that program milestone.
Goggins and the Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, as the track and field team will make the short trek up I-85 to compete in the Furman Invitational.
