Upstate Golf Teams Set Fall Schedules

Spartanburg, S.C. – Entering the first season with the ability to advance to NCAA Regionals, USC Upstate head coach Todd Lawton has announced the fall schedules for both the men's and women's golf programs. A trip to the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island highlights the men's schedule, while the women will make the trip up to Piscataway, N.J., for the Rutgers Invitational to highlight the women's slate of tournaments.
The men's team will play four tournaments in the fall with six more expected in the spring. The women women's team will play five tournaments in the fall and six in the spring. The spring schedules for the teams will be released later this fall.
The men's team will open the season on Sept. 16-17 at the Rutgers Invitational. The tournament was the first tournament Upstate played in after making the move to Division I in 2007. The Spartans claimed the team championship with Michael Lawrence winning the individual title to announce Upstate's presence on the Division I level.
Following the Rutgers Invitational, Upstate will make the trip down I-26 to Kiawah Island just south of Charleston to join a top-notch field at the Invitational at the Ocean Course Oct. 17-18. The Ocean Course at Kiawah will be the site of the 2012 PGA Championship.
Upstate will close out the fall returning to Kiawah Island to take part in the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Oct. 31-Nov. 1 and travel to the Amelia Island Invitational played at the Amelia Island Plantation Nov. 7-8.
The women's team opens its season in Spartanburg when it takes to the Country Club of Spartanburg course for the Wofford Invitational Sept. 12-13. The Spartans will play in the mountains of North Carolina when it travels to the Waynesville Inn and Club for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate Sept. 19-20. Upstate will play its third tournament of the year at the Winthrop Invitational Oct. 8-9 at the Rock Hill Country Club.
After playing three tournaments fairly close to Upstate, the Spartans will hit the road for the final two tournaments of the fall. They will head to Piscataway, N.J., and the Rutgers University Golf Course to take part in the Rutgers Invitational Oct. 14-15. The team will then head south to the state of Florida to take part in the CFSC/Hatter Classic hosted by A-Sun rival Stetson at Victoria Hills Golf Club. Victoria Hills will be the site of the A-Sun Women's Championships in the spring.
Both the men's and women's teams will be eligible for postseason play in the NCAA this year. All of Upstate's athletic teams, except for the fast-tracked programs of softball and men's soccer, have not been eligible to play in NCAA Tournaments for the last four years since the University transitioned the athletics program to Division I in 2007-08. After serving its provisional period and receiving full Division I certification in August, all of Upstate's teams are eligible for postseason play.
