Spartan Volleyball Set to Host Weekend Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (2-7) is set to host the Quality Inn & Suites Spartan Classic this weekend (Sept. 16-17) with five teams participating in the tournament action.
The Quality Inn & Suites Spartan Classic kicks off tomorrow at 2 p.m. as Wofford (8-3) faces Charleston Southern (2-9). Gardner-Webb (2-7) is slated to take on Western Carolina (3-8) at 4:30 p.m., followed by Upstate's home-opener against cross-town rival Wofford at 7 p.m. tomorrow. This marks the first game for the Spartans in their home arena, the Hodge Center, since Nov. 7, 2009 when they lost to Lipscomb 3-0. During the 2010 season the Hodge was undergoing renovations.
Upstate leads Wofford in the overall series 28-8. In the teams' last meeting Sept. 17, 2010, the Terriers beat the Spartans at Wofford 3-1. Upstate holds a 14-3 record against the Terriers at home. Wofford is led by Amanda Liguori with 100 kills on the season, while Bekah Dorsey tallies 267 assists. Defensively, the Terriers are led by Reagan Styles with 116 digs and Arden Anderson with 49 total blocks this year.
Saturday tournament action opens with a 10 a.m. match between Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb. The 12:30 p.m. contest will pit the Spartans against Western Carolina. The Catamounts lead the all-time series against Upstate 7-3.
Earlier this season, the Spartans beat Western Carolina 3-0 at Virginia's Marriott Cavalier Classic Aug. 26. The Catamounts are led by Carrie Minogue with 72 kills, while Jordan Timmermann has 261 assists. The Western Carolina defense is led by Morgan Cochran with 89 digs and Rebecca Stolz with 21 rejections on the season.
The tournament concludes with Wofford squaring off against Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. Saturday, followed by Charleston Southern taking on Western Carolina at 5:30 p.m. The Quality Inn & Suites Spartan Classic all-tournament team will be announced following the final match Saturday.
