SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Coming off of a thrilling 3-2 victory Sunday against VMI, the USC Upstate women's soccer team hits the road for a pair of matches this weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
The Spartans open the weekend at Belmont and will be looking for their first ever victory over the Bruins. The Bruins lead the all-time series, 4-0-0, and have outscored the Spartans 13-1 in the four previous meetings.
Following Friday's match, Upstate will face Lipscomb Sunday afternoon. The all-time series is deadlocked at 2-2 and the Spartans won last season's meeting, 1-0, in Spartanburg (Sept. 26, 2010). Jessica Jackyra scored what proved to be the game-winner from 35 yards out in the 70th-minute.
Quick Kicks…
• Maegan Garner scored her first collegiate goal Sunday against VMI. Garner's goal in the 80th-minute proved to be the game-winner as Upstate rallied for the 3-2 victory.
• Rachel Carr scored her first goal in a Spartan uniform in the 12th-minute against VMI. Carr returned to the pitch against Winthrop (Sept. 9) after suffering an injury during warm-ups in the exhibition match against SMC (Aug. 16).
• Michelle Calmeyn didn't find the back of the net, but she assisted on two of Upstate's goals against VMI. She assisted on Rachel Carr's goal in the 12th-minute and Courtney Mack's game-tying goal in the 74th-minute.
• Sarah Plantz tallied a career-best 13 saves last Friday at ETSU. Her 13 saves were just one shy of tying a school-record.
• Michelle Calmeyn recorded a hat trick (32', 64', 66') against Alabama State on Sept. 11. It was the first hat trick in nearly 10 years and just the third in program history (Thea Moen, Sept. 8, 2001, vs. Mars Hill; Thea Moen, Oct. 23, 2001, vs. Clayton State).
• Katelyn Allen scored what proved to be the game-winner against Alabama State when she scored on a header off of Kayli Moore's corner kick in the 28th-minute.
Looking Back at VMI
USC Upstate senior Maegan Garner found the back of the net in the 80th-minute to help the women's soccer team claim a 3-2 victory over VMI Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer Stadium. Garner notched her first collegiate goal on a double-assist from Alyssa Librizzi and Katelyn Allen. VMI goalkeeper Amanda Berrios was caught out of position allowing Garner a clean look at the goal from the left wing.
Upstate scored the lone goal of the first half when Rachel Carr scored after a misplay by Berrios. Carr scored her first goal of 2011 on a pass from Michelle Calmeyn.
The Spartans maintained their 1-0 advantage until intermission after a pair of solid defensive plays. In the 27th-minute, Upstate goalie Rachel Collins was caught out of the net, but a sliding save by Allen kept the Keydets off of the scoreboard. Less than 10 minutes later, Collins grabbed VMI's Allie Segura header out of the air to keep Upstate in front.
In the 51st-minute, the Keydets finally got on the scoreboard when Simone Jimenez scored on a miscommunication by the Spartan defense. Less than eight minutes later after a goalkeeper change by the Spartans, VMI took a 2-1 lead when Christelle Ndongo found the back of the net. Ndongo's shot appeared to be sailing high, but snuck into the top left corner of the net.
Courtney Mack delivered the equalizer in the 74th-minute. Mack scored from the top of the box on an assist from Calmeyn. Less than four minutes later, Mack had a chance to give the Spartans the lead but her shot sailed just left and the score remained tied at 2-2. The Spartans took the lead for good, 3-2, when Garner scored from the left side of the box.
The Keydets had a pair of chances to tie the game in the final 3:30, but both attempts sailed wide and the Spartans claimed the 3-2 victory.
Looking Back at ETSU
USC Upstate surrendered two goals in the each half and ETSU claimed a 4-0 victory in the conference opener for both squads Friday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
ETSU's Jenna Caudle scored the first goal of the contest in the seventh minute as she scored from the left side of the box to the lower right corner. Caudle was assisted on her sixth goal of the season by Genna Petersen.
In the 26th-minute Upstate goalie Sarah Plantz made a great save to keep the score at 1-0. After the ball bounced away following the save, Plantz grabbed the ball before the Lady Bucs had a chance to take another shot.
In the 34th-minute, ETSU increased its lead to 2-0 when Samantha Kron's corner kick from the right side bent into the back of the goal. The Lady Bucs increased their lead to 3-0 in the 48th-minute when Taylor Maxson's shot from inside the box found the back of the net.
ETSU scored its fourth and final goal of the match in the 76th-minute as Kristi Davis scored on an assist from Kayla White. ETSU owned a 16-3 advantage in shots in the first half and finished with 32 shots compared to five for Upstate. The Lady Bucs also led the way in corner kicks (5-0). Plantz tallied 13 saves for the Spartans while Lady Buc keeper Caitlin Gaughan recorded one save.
