SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team faces its second straight opponent from the Big South Conference when it makes the trek to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Eagles lead the all-time series, 1-0, thanks to a 1-0 victory in Spartanburg on Sept. 12, 2008. Chelsea Tidwell scored the game-winner in the 88th-minute to propel Winthrop to the win.
Upstate will close out the weekend as it hosts Alabama State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The match will also serve as the Spartans' annual Family Day event. Upstate leads the all-time series, 2-0, and won the most recent meeting at ASU (W, 2-0, Sept. 19, 2010). Sophomore Jessica Jackyra led the Spartans to the win in Montgomery, Ala. The Spartans downed the Hornets in Spartanburg, 9-0, on Sept. 9, 2007.
Quick Kicks…
• Kayli Moore notched her first collegiate goal on Aug. 28 against Francis Marion.
• Sarah Plantz, making her first collegiate start in goal, recorded a career-high nine saves on Aug. 28 against Francis Marion.
• Michelle Calmeyn recorded a hat trick in her first collegiate match. In the exhibition against Spartanburg Methodist, Calmeyn tallied three goals and helped Upstate claim a 4-0 win over the Pioneers.
• Five of the 11 players that started the contest at Gardner-Webb on Sunday night were freshmen. In all, nine rookies saw action against the Runnin' Bulldogs in the season opener.
• After adding 14 new players (12 freshmen) to the squad with her 2010 recruiting class, head coach Renee Lopez again signed another large recruiting class. Coach Lopez's 2011 signing class features 13 new players, 11 of which are freshmen.
• In 2010, Rachel Collins earned Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team honors after leading the conference in both saves (115) and saves per match (6.39), while ranking third in save percentage (.804).
• Last season, Upstate downed Lipscomb and earned draws against Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast to post its highest conference points total since joining the A-Sun in 2007.
Looking Back at Charleston Southern
CSU (1-3-0) capitalized on 12 first-half shots as it tallied three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 lead at halftime. Toni Lashley put the Lady Buccanners in front 1-0 in the 15th-minute when she put her shot past Upstate (0-4-1) keeper Sarah Plantz. CSU also scored goals in the 33rd- (Rebecca Hollstegge) and 41st-minutes (Caroline Eriksson).
The Lady Buccaneers tacked on its fourth and final goal in the contest when Gina Thomas scored on a header off of a pass from Caroline Eriksson in the 72nd-minute.
CSU led the way in shots (23-3), shots on-goal (12-1) and corner kicks (8-5). Upstate totaled eight saves in the match, compared to one for CSU. CSU was called for 10 fouls and whistled offsides six times, while Upstate committed five fouls.
Looking Back at The Citadel
Upstate team surrendered four first half goals and the Bulldogs scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 8th-minute as Vanessa Aponte put her shot past Upstate goalkeeper Rachel Collins. The Citadel pushed the lead to 2-0 when Grace Raines scored less than eight minutes later.
The home-standing Bulldogs tacked on two more goals in the first half (Ruth Leiva, 36'; Aponte, 44') as they took a 4-0 lead into the locker room at intermission. The Citadel tacked on its fifth and final goal of the contest in the 59th-minute when Mariana Garcia scored off of a corner kick.
The Bulldogs totaled 30 shots and 17 on-goal, while Upstate took nine total shots with eight on-target. The Citadel also led the way in corners, 5-2. Collins tallied 10 saves in 45 minutes of play, while Sarah Plantz recorded two saves in the second half. The Bulldogs totaled eight saves in the match.
