
Upstate Returns Home for Three Contests This Week; Senior Day Set

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (5-10, 1-3 A-Sun) returns to the Hodge Center after an eight-match hiatus, opening a six-match homestand with three matches this week, including Senior Day Friday evening.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Tiger Turmoil: The Spartans return to the Hodge Center for three matches this week, beginning with a 6 p.m. nonconference contest against Savannah State Tuesday. Upstate leads the all-time series against the Tigers 3-0, including a 2-0 advantage in Spartanburg. SSU is currently on a 46-match-losing streak with the team's last win coming Nov. 4, 2010 in a 3-0 decision at Paine College.
Bison Bites: Upstate hosts A-Sun foe Lipscomb Friday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. LU holds an 8-0 record against the Spartans, including a 4-0 mark in Spartanburg. Last season, the Bison picked up a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-19 and 25-16) Nov. 12, 2011 in the Hodge Center. With a 5-0 record in A-Sun play, Lipscomb and Florida Gulf Coast top the league standings. LU is second in the conference in kills, averaging 13.79 per set. Among A-Sun play, the Bison also rank second with 14.30 kills per set.
Clash of the Helmets: Northern Kentucky travels to Spartanburg Saturday for a 3 p.m. conference match-up. This will be the first meeting between the Spartans and the Norse. NKU currently leads the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.252), opponent hitting percentage (.166), assists (13.03 per set), kills (14.34 per set) and service aces (1.66 per set).
QUICK HITS:
• Upstate went 1-2 last week, picking up its first conference win Sept. 28 at Stetson. The Spartans swept the Hatters in three sets.
• Freshman Kayla Eversgerd is the only Spartan with 100-plus kills and digs on the year. She has recorded 135 kills and collected 114 digs this season.
• Sophomore Kayla McAvoy ranks third in the A-Sun in hitting percentage with a .327 mark and ranks fifth in kills, averaging 3.33 per set. She leads the league in conference matches with a .468 hitting percentage.
• Senior Emily Bingham is second on the squad, tallying 140 kills to average 2.64 per set. She boasts a .274 hitting percentage for eighth in the A-Sun. Bingham also leads the team in blocking with 36 total denials, averaging 0.68 rejections a set.
• Junior Morgan Page leads the Spartans with 210 digs, averaging 3.96 per set. She ranks sixth the A-Sun statistics.
• Senior Mindy Quimby leads Upstate with 14 service aces on the year, ranking ninth in the conference with an average of 0.27 aces per set.
