Upstate Volleyball Ready for Bears and Bucs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (8-13, 3-6 A-Sun) is set for two Atlantic Sun Conference matches this week.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Bear Bites: Upstate travels to Mercer Oct. 16 for a 6 p.m. A-Sun contest. The Bears lead the all-time series against the Spartans 6-1, including a 3-0 advantage in Macon. Last season, Upstate dropped a 3-1 decision (23-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18) Oct. 22, 2011 in the Hodge Center. Mercer leads the conference statistically in digs, averaging 18.14 per set.
Buccaneer Bullets: ETSU travels to Spartanburg Friday for a 7 p.m. conference match-up. The Buccaneers hold an 11-3 advantage against the Spartans, including a 3-1 mark at Upstate. Earlier this season, ETSU defeated Upstate 3-0 (25-20, 25-23 and 25-15) in Johnson City, Tenn., Sept. 21. The Buccaneers currently lead the league in blocking with 2.69 rejections per set and 2.91 denials a set in A-Sun play. ETSU's Megan Devine tops the A-Sun in kills with 3.97 per set.
QUICK HITS:
• Upstate went 2-1 last week, picking up conference wins against Kennesaw State and Jacksonville.
• Sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) ranks sixth in the A-Sun in conference play with a .338 hitting percentage and is seventh in kills per set with 3.42. She leads the team with 240 kills and an overall hitting percentage of .316. McAvoy also leads Upstate in blocking with 43 total rejections, averaging 0.61 blocks per set.
• Freshman Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) is second on the team with 208 kills, averaging 3.25 per set. She is 17 digs away from being the only Spartan to tally 200 kills and digs this year. She averages 2.86 digs per set.
• Senior Emily Sanders (Edwardsville, Ill.) paces the Spartans with 316 digs, averaging 4.27 per set. She ranks second in the conference in A-Sun play, averaging 4.87 digs per set.
