Spartans Set to Host Pair of A-Sun Matches

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (10-15, 5-8 A-Sun) is set to host a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference opponents this weekend inside the Hodge Center.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Hatter Highlights: Upstate hosts Stetson Friday for a 6 p.m. A-Sun contest. Earlier this season, the Spartans picked-up a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) victory at SU Sept. 28. Upstate leads the all-time series against the Hatters 7-2 with a 3-1 mark in Spartanburg. The Hatters are on a seven-match losing-streak. They rank sixth in the A-Sun in blocks, averaging 1.72 per set.
Eagle Extras: The Spartans welcomes Florida Gulf Coast to the Hodge Center Saturday for a 3 p.m. match. The Eagles hold a 8-0 advantage against the Spartans, including a 3-0 record in Spartanburg. Earlier this season, Upstate dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) decision at FGCU Sept. 29. The Eagles are undefeated in league play, topping the A-Sun standings with a 14-0 mark and riding a 15-match winning-streak. In A-Sun play, FGCU leads the conference in hitting percentage (.277) and opponent hitting percentage (.175).
QUICK HITS:
• Upstate's three-match winning-streak came to an end last week with a 3-0 loss at Northern Kentucky Oct. 26. The three-straight wins were the most consecutive A-Sun victories for Upstate since joining the league in 2007.
• The Spartans' last win came in the form of an exciting 3-2 (16-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-27 and 15-10) victory over ETSU Oct. 19. The Buccaneers were third in the A-Sun standings before entering the contest against Upstate.
• In A-Sun play, Upstate paces the league in digging and service aces, averaging 18.21 digs per set and 1.42 aces per set.
• The Spartans rank 21st in digs per set in the most recent NCAA National Ranking Summary and 43rd in aces per set.
• Freshman Lexi Gober is second in A-Sun play in service aces with 0.42 per set, while senior Emily Sanders ranks second in league play in digs per set with 4.87.
