
Spartans Complete Competition in NCAA East Preliminaries

NCAA East Regional Preliminary Results
Jacksonville, Fla. – USC Upstate distance runner Jemeli Sang wrapped up USC Upstate's efforts in the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries Saturday night by running in the 5,000-meter race, claiming 23rd in the field of 48 runners.
Sang, from Eldoret, Kenya, ran the 5,000 in 16:44.92 to finish 23rd in the event. It was the second-fastest time in program history. She entered the event with the 38th-best qualifying mark and finished 15 positions ahead of that position in the NCAA preliminary round.
Sang's race in the 5,000 meters was the final event for Upstate track & field members in the meet. She ran on Thursday night in 10,000-meter race, claiming 21st in the event. She had entered the race with the 33rd-best time in the field and improved her position by 12 spots.
In addition to Sang, Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) and Kenny Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) also competed in the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries. Kemboi raced in the 10,000 meters on Thursday night and claimed 15th, just three spots out of qualifying for the regionals and a full 28 spots higher than his qualifying position.
Sugishita competed in two events. He began the meet by finishing 18th in the discus, six places back of a regional qualifying spot, but 19 spots higher than his qualifying position. He claimed 46th in the hammer throw Friday morning.
The NCAA East Regional Preliminaries concluded Upstate's widely successful 2012 outdoor track & field season. The Spartans claimed eight individual championships in the 2012 A-Sun Outdoor Track & Field Championships, led by Sugushita who was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer after winning three titles in the discus, hammer and shot put.
