SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With finals completed at USC Upstate, members of the Spartan track & field teams volunteered their time participating in "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" at Fairforest Elementary School Friday, May 4.
The variation of the popular television game show was used as a study game for the fifth graders at Fairforest Elementary as they prepare for their end of grade testing. The Upstate track & field teams helped the students review subjects such as social studies, math, science, language and reading. The fifth graders begin their testing tomorrow.
"It was fun to see the enthusiasm and energy of the fifth graders," said Upstate associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "The track team and the fifth graders had a great time."
The Spartans spent the day at Fairforest playing "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" and visiting with the fifth graders at lunch and recess. Upstate has five student-athletes from Kenya and a few of them gave the students Swahili lessons, while also learning some Russian in return.
