Spartanburg, S.C. – With only six matches remaining in the regular season, the USC Upstate women's soccer team heads back on the road for a pair of pivotal weekend matches at Stetson (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Florida Gulf Coast (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
Upstate (3-6-3, 0-2-1) enters the weekend coming off a two-game home stretch that saw the Spartans fall 3-1 to Kennesaw State before playing to a 0-0 scoreless draw with Mercer. In that game with the Bears, Upstate senior keeper Sarah Plantz tied her season-high with 11 saves and picked up her fourth shutout of the season. Plantz ranks second in the A-Sun in shutouts and is just one blanking behind Brittany Brown of Florida Gulf Coast for the league lead.
Stetson (4-6-2, 2-1-1) went 1-0-1 last weekend with a 3-3 tie at Lipscomb and a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky. The Hatters' only setback in conference was a 2-1 home loss to Jacksonville. Florida Gulf Coast enters the weekend with an 8-3-2 overall record and a 3-0-1 mark in the A-Sun and is riding a four-match unbeaten streak. The Eagles have not lost since dropping a 4-0 decision at in-state rival UCF Sept. 22. Since then, Florida Gulf Coast has outscored its opponents 8-2.
Upstate sophomore midfielder Haley Gethin leads the Spartans with five points on a pair of goals and one assist. Sophomore Kenzie Major, freshman Mollie Waters and senior Rachel Carr are all tied for the team lead with two assists apiece.
