Spartanburg, S.C. – Looking to build on some solid efforts to start the season, the USC Upstate women's golf team will be back in action when it plays in the JU Classic Monday and Tuesday at the Marsh Landing Country Club.
The JU Classic is being hosted by A-Sun rival Jacksonville. The 54-hole tournament consists of 11 teams with the field playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Joining Upstate and Jacksonville in the tournament are College of Charleston, Daytona State College, Florida Atlantic, High Point, A-Sun foe North Florida, A-Sun foe Stetson, Troy, Winthrop and Wofford. Marsh Landing plays at 5,987 yards and is a par-72 layout. The Spartans have already played in tournaments this season with the likes of College of Charleston, High Point and Wofford. This will be Upstate's second appearance in the tournament, having finished sixth in 2010.
Upstate is coming off a tournament that saw very difficult weather conditions play havoc with the field and make for inconsistent playing conditions at the CSU Wendy's Invitational (Oct. 7-8). The players dealt with hard rain and wind in the first round, calmer conditions in the second and strong winds in the third. Still, the Spartans posted their lowest round of the season in the second round, a 309, and finished with a tournament average of 320.3, just two shots over its season average.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send a familiar lineup into action at the JU Classic. He will use the same lineup he has suited up for the first three tournaments of the year with Allea Hawkins, Rachel Reiling, Brittany Lowe, Amanda Hall and Malika Allie teeing off for the Spartans. The unit averages 318 per round. Hawkins and Reiling own sub-80 averages with Hawkins leading the way at 79.3 and Reiling right behind at 79.6. Hawkins has been the top Spartan in one tournament this year and the second best Spartan in two others.
