
Spartans Finish 5th at Terrier Intercollegiate

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team lowered its score by five strokes over Monday's first round, finishing with a 311 to finish fifth at the Terrier Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Upstate opened the tournament with a 316 and was in fifth place after the first round. The Spartans battled to move up on the leaderboard and shaved two strokes off of Appalachian State's score, but fell short of the Mountaineers by four strokes. High Point posted back-to-back rounds of 294 to win the team championship with a 588 total. Wofford was second at 594 and was followed by Savannah College of Art & Design (607), Appalachian State (623), Upstate (627), Presbyterian (648) and The Citadel (693).
Upstate was paced in the tournament by freshman Allea Hawkins (Hendersonville, N.C.). A day after she hit a hole-in-one on the par-3 6th hole, she carded a 79 and finished 16th individually with a 156 total to lead the Spartan cause. Rachel Reiling (Littleton, Colo.) carded the lowest round of the day for Upstate, a 76, and claimed a tie for 17th with a 157 total. She tied teammate Malika Allie (Cape Town, South Africa), who finished the tournament with a 78 Tuesday.
Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) carded a 78 to close the tournament Tuesday as the fourth Spartan to shoot in the 70's in the round. She finished tied for 21st with a 158 total. Brittany Lowe (Spartanburg, S.C.) shot an 88 and finished tied for 32nd with a 168 total. Allie Gennaula (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) played as an individual and finished 41st with a 182 effort.
High Point's Sarah Bae won the individual championship with a 143 total after shooting rounds of 72 and 71.
After playing five straight days of tournament golf to start the season, Upstate will take some time off before heading back to the course at the Wendy's Charleston Classic Oct. 7-8.
