Jekyll Island, Ga. – Rachel Reiling and Malika Allie each shot 80 in the first round of the Eat-A-Peach Classic to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team in the season opening tournament Friday afternoon at the Pine Lakes Golf Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Resort.
Mercer, the host of the tournament, opened with a 293 to take the lead after the first round. Seminole State finished the day in second at 317, while Florida Gulf Coast shot 321 and stands third heading into the second round Saturday. Upstate opened with a 322 and is right in the hunt battling for a strong finish. Mercer's Lacey Fears opened with a 1-under-par 71 to take a one shot lead into the second round.
"We hit the full shots well today, but need to take more advantage of some short opportunities and get our reads right on these grainy greens," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I like that our players are excited about playing our next round."
Reiling (Littleton, Colo.) went out in 39 and came home in 41 for her 80. Allie (Cape Town, South Africa) went out in 38 and came in with a 42.
Brittany Lowe (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Allea Hawkins (Hendersonville, N.C.), who was playing in her first collegiate tournament as a freshman, each shot 81 with mirror nines of 42 and 39. Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) opened with an 83.
The teams will play the second round Saturday before completing the tournament with the final round Sunday.
