
Upstate Heads South for JU Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team will leave the Carolinas for the first time this season when it travels to Florida and opens play Monday in the JU Classic hosted by Jacksonville at Marsh Landing Country Club.
After opening the season at the 36-hole Great Smokies Intercollegiate, Upstate will play its second consecutive 54-hole tournament when it tees off at the JU Classic. The JU Classic will feature 14 teams competing on the 5,967-yard, par-72 layout at Marsh Landing Monday and Tuesday. The Spartans and host Jacksonville are joined in the tournament by Boston University, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Daytona State, Florida Atlantic, Maryland, McNeese State, North Florida, Seminole State, Stetson, Troy and Western Carolina. The field boasts six schools ranked in the Top 125 in the nation in the latest ranking by Golfweek, including Top 100 programs Coastal Carolina and Troy.
Upstate is coming off a seventh place effort at the CSU Wendy's Invitational where it posted rounds of 321, 323 and 318. The tournament featured a strong outing by freshman Sidney Dermody who claimed her first collegiate Top 10 finish in just the second tournament of her career. She did it posting rounds of 74, 74 and 76 to tie for 10th.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the same five players he has used in the previous two tournaments this year at the JU Classic this week as Sidney Dermody, Rachel Reiling, Allea Hawkins, Payton Culler and Malika Allie will suit up for the Spartans. The lineup is averaging 315.0 per round and posted a 298, tied for the second-lowest round in the history of the program, at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
Dermody leads the Spartans with a 75.8 stroke average and a .651 head-to-head winning percentage. Reiling also averages in the 70's at 79.8. Reiling averages just over 80 and 80.8, while Culler and Allie are just over 81 for the season.
