Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team will stay in Spartanburg for its next tournament, the fourth of the season, when it tees off in the Terrier Intercollegiate hosted by Wofford College at the Country Club of Spartanburg Monday and Tuesday.
Upstate is making its fourth appearance in the tournament, each in the last four seasons. The Spartans claimed their best finish last year with a fifth-place showing as Allea Hawkins highlighted the tournament with a hole-in-one in the first round. The Country Club of Spartanburg is a par-72 layout and plays at 5,972 yards. The teams will play 18 holes each day of the event.
Upstate is one of nine teams in the tournament and is joined by host Wofford, Appalachian State, The Citadel, Converse, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, Seminole State and Winthrop. Winthrop is the highest ranked team in the latest Golfstat rankings, coming in at No. 158, while Converse is ranked No. 29 in NCAA Division II.
Upstate is coming off a solid performance at the JU Classic. The Spartans have made three appearances in the tournament and shot their best 36-hole total ever in the event after turning in rounds of 315, 312 and 325. The 627 36-hole total was 17 strokes better than the previous best effort.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Sidney Dermody, Rachel Reiling, Allea Hawkins, Payton Culler and Malika Allie into action this week. It is the same lineup used in the JU Classic and the same five who have suited up for every tournament this fall. Allie Gennaula and Kinsey Soniat will play as individuals, marking their first action of the season. Upstate is averaging 315.9 for the season, 6.1 strokes better than the single season scoring average record of 322.0 recorded by the 2012-13 squad. Dermody leads the way with a 76.4 average.
Upstate Quick Notes
- Sidney Dermody is the first Spartan in the history of the program to shoot in the 70's in the first five rounds of her career. She ran her streak to seven straight rounds in the 70's before carding an 81 in the final round of the JU Classic on Oct. 14.
- Upstate players have now shot 17 rounds in the 70's this season.
- Upstate made a season-high 28 birdies in the CSU Wendy's Invitational with Sidney Dermody leading the team with 10. Overall, the Spartans have made 65 birdies this season.
- The 298 shot in the first round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate was the lowest season-opening round in school history, topping the 301 carded by the 2008 squad also in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. It is also tied for the second-lowest round in program history.
- Allea Hawkins is the only current Spartan women's golfer to have recorded a hole-in-one in a collegiate tournament. She recorded a hole-in-one in back-to-back tournaments as a freshman in 2013-14, recording the aces in her first two tournaments.
- Three different Spartans have finished as the top Upstate player in three tournaments so far this year with Malika Allie claiming the top position at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, Sidney Dermody taking top honors at the CSU Wendy's Invitational and Rachel Reiling in the top spot at the JU Classic.
