Brittany Walls Highlights Day One for Upstate at A-Sun Indoor Championships

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Junior Brittany Walls earned her first career All-Conference accolade Friday as the USC Upstate track and field team completed competition during the first day of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships from the JDL Fast Track.
The Spartan women ended day one tied for fifth place of the team rankings with 26 total points while the men are sixth. The women have already eclipsed their point total from last season's championship as they finished with 20 en route to a sixth-place finish.
The women's team finished the opening day with six personal-bests and one school record broken.
Walls became the first Upstate women's track athlete in program history to earn All-Conference honors in the indoor pentathlon event. She was named Third Team All-Conference after finishing third with 3,197 points, which breaks her own school record and personal-best. Walls previously set the school's indoor pentathlon record at last year's A-Sun Championships. She also added a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.64-meters (5-04.50).
Brenicke Johnson and Dominique Nock both qualified for the finals tomorrow in the 60-meter dash after finishing inside the top five of the preliminary round. Johnson placed fourth with a personal-best time of 7.56 and Nock followed in fifth after her time of 7.61.
Alexis Jacobs, Draneisha Griffin and Jasmine Polite each earned top 10 finishes in their respective events. Jacobs posted a fourth-place finish in the shot put, Griffin was sixth in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 5.72-meters (18-09.25), and Polite finished seventh in the 3000-meter run after her personal-best time of 10:12.85.
Danielle Horneff also achieved a personal-best on Friday as she ran a 10:48.12 in the 3000-meter run.
On the men's side, the distance medley team of Mark Rennix, Cameron Pratt, Damian Grady and Theodore Kountourogiannis recorded a sixth-place with their time of 10:42.90.
Jake McKown will wrap up the men's heptathlon tomorrow after competing in four of the events today. He currently sits in 10th place with 2,211 points. McKown had two top 10 finishes as part of the heptathlon highlighted by a fourth-place performance in the 60-meter dash after a time of 7.39.
Jacksonville currently leads in the women's rankings with 70 points and East Tennessee State is first for the men at 62 points.
Day two of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon. The women's competition will resume at 12 p.m. with the mile run. Fans can follow the final day of action via live results.
