Upstate Sets Two School Records on Final Day of A-Sun Indoor Championships

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Heaven Briggs, Dominique Nock, Essence Jackson and Ashley Edmond earned the program's first All-Conference honor in the event Saturday to highlight the final day of competition for USC Upstate at the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships inside JDL Fast Track.
The Spartans finished in sixth place on both the men's and women's side. The women ended the meet with a program-best 55 points capped off by the All-Conference performances in the 4x400-meter relay and by Brittany Walls in the indoor pentathlon. The men compiled 19 points during the weekend.
The quartet of Briggs, Nock, Jackson and Edmond broke their own school indoor record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:56.38, while recording the program's first win in that event during the conference meet.
The first-place performance capped off a day in which Upstate set two school indoor records and 16 personal-bests. Briggs also broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash after turning in a time of 57.82 to finish fourth.
Alexis Jacobs and Brenicke Johnson each turned in top-five finishes in the weight throw and 60-meter dash, respectively. Jacobs was fifth in the weight throw following her mark of 15.50-meters (50-10.25) and Johnson placed fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63. Nock was just behind Johnson in the 60-meter dash as she was sixth after a time of 7.66.
The Spartan women also saw personal-best times or marks achieved by Edmond (400-meter dash), Jackson (800-meter run), Rebecca Elliott (800-meter run), Draneisha Griffin (triple jump), Jasmine Polite (5000-meter run), Danielle Horneff (5000-meter run) and Janay Chisolm (5000-meter run).
Matt Johnson and Brandon Goodman led the Upstate men as each finished in the top five of their event. Johnson posted a fifth-place finish the in the 800-meter run after his time of 1:56.04 and Goodman had a leap of 1.95-meters (6-04.75) to place fifth in the high jump. The 4x400-meter relay team of Ronald Collins, Damian Grady, Kyle Jones and Cameron Pratt turned in a fourth-place performance with their time of 3:28.09.
In the men's triple jump event, Michael Smith posted a mark of 13.74-meters (45-01.00) to finish seventh.
The men had personal-best performances turned in by seven athletes including Pratt (400-meter dash), Jones (400-meter dash), Bryson Dawkins (800-meter run), Ethan Dopp (800-meter run), Rashaude Gibbs (200-meter dash), Ross Oden (5000-meter run) and Alex Love (5000-meter run).
Jacksonville won the A-Sun Championship on the women's side and Kennesaw State took home first place for the men.
The Spartans open their outdoor season Mar. 14-15 when they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the CCU Invitational.
