Upstate Breaks Two School Records on First Day of CCU Invitational

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The opening day of the CCU Invitational saw the USC Upstate track and field team break two school records and collect two first-place performances Friday afternoon at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Along with the two school records broken and two first-place finishes, the Spartans saw personal-bests set by two athletes on the women's side.
Ronald Collins and the women's 4x800-meter relay quartet of Anastasia Kolesnitchenko, Essence Jackson, Jasmine Polite and Molly Bliss highlighted the opening day for Upstate as they finished in first place of their respective events. Collins, running in his first outdoor meet as a Spartan, ran a 56.75 in the 400-meter hurdles en route to a first-place finish. Kolesnitchenko, Jackson, Polite and Bliss set a new school record in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:19.04.
Alexis Jacobs continued off her impressive performance during the indoor season as she broke a five-year old school record in the hammer throw event. Jacobs turned in a throw of 45.36-meters (148-10) for a ninth-place finish, breaking the previous record set at the 2009 A-Sun Championships by Kayla Speed.
Rebecca Elliott and Kierstin Williams both collected personal-bests on Friday. Elliott ran a 2:27.19 in the 800-meter run and Williams posted a mark of 36.29-meters (119-01) in the hammer throw. Elliott would finish sixth in the 800-meter run.
Brittany Walls was one of two Upstate athletes to turn in top-5 performances along with Jake McKown. She finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.06, while McKown also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.82.
The final day of competition for the CCU Invitational begins at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with five different events.
