Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Brenicke Johnson finished in first place of the 100-meter dash to conclude the final day of competition for the USC Upstate track and field team Saturday at the CCU Invitational from Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Johnson broke Dominique Nock's school record in the 100-meter dash as she ran a personal-best time of 11.78. The first-place performance by Johnson capped off a day for Upstate in which it set five school records and saw four athletes obtain personal-best marks. The Spartan women finished the day by breaking four school records while the men had one.
KeAndra Ladson broke a four-year old school record in the 100-meter hurdles as her time of 15.41 eclipsed that of Camille Masanotti at the 2010 A-Sun Championships. Alexis Jacobs, for the second straight day, recorded a new school record in the shot put as her throw of 12.73-meters (41-09.25) surpassed the mark of Gabby Walker during the 2010 Upstate Twilight. Brittany Walls would later break another of Walker's school records as she posted a personal-best mark of 34.72-meters (113-11) in the discus.
Michael Smith became the school's new record holder in the triple jump as his leap of 14.56-meters (47-09.25) broke the previous record set by Perrish Goggins at the 2011 Tiger Track Classic. Smith would go on the finish fifth in the event.
Johnson and Smith were two of four Spartans to post top-5 finishes on Saturday. In the men's high jump, Brandon Goodman finished fifth in the "A" flight following his leap of 1.95-meters (6-04.75). The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Johnson, Draneisha Griffin, Heaven Briggs and Ashley Edmond placed second in the event with their time of 47.07.
