Pinehurst, N.C. – Malika Allie shot a team season-best round of 73 to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team in the second and final round of the Pinehurst Challenge Sunday afternoon on Pinehurst No. 1 at the Pinehurst Golf Resort. The tournament was scheduled to be a 54-hole event, but was shortened to 36 holes due to heavy rain hitting the area Sunday and expected to continue into Monday.
Allie's 73 topped the 75 shot by Amanda Hall in the CSU Wendy's Invitational in October for the lowest round of the season. It also allowed the Spartans to shoot a 312, 21 strokes better than Saturday's first round of 333. The Spartans finished with a 645 total and fell just one shot short of Bucknell and Siena, which both finished with 644 totals.
"Malika played a great round today and did it without her best ball-striking," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Her focus was outstanding. Overall, our first round scores proved to put us too far behind and I wish we could have played another day. But, the weather just didn't cooperate."
The College of Charleston claimed the team championship with a 583 total. The Cougars were followed by Jacksonville State (605), High Point (611), Jacksonville (616), Middle Tennessee (620), Gardner-Webb (624), Appalachian State (626), Boston U. (629), SCAD Savannah (630), Western Michigan (630), Illinois State (640), Bucknell (644), Siena (644) and Upstate (645).
Upstate had three players shoot in the 70's Sunday. Rachel Reiling posted a 77 and tied Allie for the best finish for the Spartans in the tournament. They claimed a tie for 33rd with a 158 total. Amanda Hall shot a 79 Sunday and claimed a tie for 45th with a 160 total. Allea Hawkins carded an 83 for the fourth countable score Sunday and turned in a 169 total. Kinsey Soniat finished with an 88, shaving four strokes off her score from Saturday.
College of Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck and Jacksonville State's Maya Parsons were co-medalists with 141 totals.
