Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Allea Hawkins and Amanda Hall each shot rounds in the 70's to lead USC Upstate in the first round of the Low Country Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at Moss Creek Plantation on Hilton Head Island. The Spartans stand tied for sixth with Wofford heading into Monday's final round.
Hawkins turned in a 78 and Hall carded a 79 to lead Upstate as the Spartans opened the tournament with a 327.
"Overall, today's round was okay," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "This is a demanding course in every way and that is evident in how high the scores were from good players on really good teams. Allea was playing superb until her last few holes, but still put together a nice round. Amanda has been there for us all season and that was the same today. Her consistency is her strength."
Samford opened the tournament with a 313 to take the first round lead. Western Carolina is breathing down the Bulldogs' necks at 314. Gardner-Webb is third at 318 and is followed by Bethune-Cookman (324), Presbyterian (326), Upstate (327), Wofford (327), The Citadel (329), Appalachian State (336) and Radford (341).
Hawkins is tied for fifth after posting her 78, while Hall is tied for 12th to give the Spartans two players in the Top 15. Rachel Reiling carded an 84 and is tied for 32nd, while Malika Allie shot an 86 with the fourth countable score for Upstate. Kinsey Soniat opened with a 94.
"At this point in the season, I am starting to see our top four show that they can all post good scores," said Lawton. "We need more and on the same day to help us see some real gains on the leaderboard."
Western Carolina's Kristin Swindell opened the tournament with a 75 to take the overnight lead by a stroke over Samford's Bailey Gray.
