Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Allea Hawkins claimed a tie for 15th to lead the USC Upstate cause as the Spartans finished tied for seventh at the Low Country Invitational Monday afternoon at Moss Creek Plantation.
With all the teams tested by strong winds and cooler temperatures throughout the day, the scores soared. The lowest score turned in by any team was 315 and only three teams broke 320 on the day. Upstate had opened the tournament with a 327 Sunday, but fought the conditions Monday en route to a 348 for a 675 total.
"It was very cool and windy, making the conditions difficult today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "The wind dried out the greens very quickly and made them difficult. We didn't hit the ball as well and we struggled to make adjustments on the greens, and that doubled down on some of our players mentally. We had some comparatively good play in some areas, we just needed that fourth score to be with everyone else today."
Hawkins carded an 85, tied for the second lowest score of the day for Upstate, to finish tied for 15th with a 163 total as the top Spartan in the tournament. She finished one stroke ahead of Amanda Hall, who finished tied for 19th with a 164 total. Hawkins and Hall gave the Spartans two Top 20 finishes.
Samford shot a 315 Monday and won the team championship with a 628 total. Western Carolina was second at 631 and was followed on the leaderboard by Gardner-Webb (643), Bethune-Cookman (647), Wofford (661), Presbyterian (669), Upstate (675), Radford (675), Appalachian State (681) and The Citadel (696).
Rachel Reiling turned in the lowest score of the day for Upstate, an 84, and finished 31st with a 168 total. Kinsey Soniat shot a 94 and Malika Allie carded a 96 to finish the day for the Spartans.
Western Carolina owned the top two positions on the individual leaderboard. Kristin Swindell won medalist honors with a 151 total, two strokes ahead of teammate Kim Mitchell.
