Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate track and field team returns to action Thursday afternoon as it makes the short trip to Rock Hill for the Carolina's Cup hosted by Winthrop University at the Irwin Belk Track.
The schedule for Thursday kicks off at 4:15 p.m. with the men's and women's hammer throw, and lasts until 8:45 p.m. with the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay. The trophy presentation will follow at 9 p.m.
Upstate is one of seven teams competing tomorrow at the Carolina's Cup. Along with Winthrop, the field will consist of Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, The Citadel, College of Charleston and Savannah State.
The Spartans had seven athletes compete last Saturday at Wofford's Terrier Relays and saw three post finishes inside the top 10. Erin Gethin led Upstate with her first top-5 performance of the season as she placed 5th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:25.57. Kierstin Williams also finished 7th in the hammer throw, her best this season, following her mark of 38.90-meters. Matt Johnson posted the best finish for the Spartan men as he had a 7th place showing in the 400-meter dash with his time of 49.79.
Upstate will be making its first trip to Winthrop's Irwin Belk Track since the 2012 season when it competed in the Winthrop Invitational. At the meet, Johnson won the 800-meter run while Jasmine Polite took home top honors in the 1500-meter run. Andrew Kipchumba added two top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run and 1500-meter run. Brittany Walls finished fourth in the 100-meter dash, and Ashley Edmond and Meagan Bailey were part of the 4x100-meter relay team that turned in a 3rd place performance.
In its final meet prior to the A-Sun Championships in May, Upstate heads to Charlotte next weekend (Apr. 18-19) for the Charlotte Invitational.
