Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate freshman Theodore Kountourogiannis has been selected this afternoon as the Atlantic Sun Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week following his performance this past Sunday in the Aggie Last Chance.
Kountourogiannis, a native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, recorded his best career finish in the 1500-meter run during the one-day event held in Greensboro, N.C. The distance runner finished 2nd in the event after turning in a personal-best time of 4:07.78. The time posted by Kountourogiannis is the fastest this season by an Upstate runner in the 1500-meter, besting the previous mark of 4:11.28 set by Andrew Kipchumba on Mar. 14 at the season-opening CCU Invitational.
The freshman becomes the fifth Spartan this season to receive a weekly award from the A-Sun. Ashley Edmond and Destinie Sykes swept the women's awards on Apr. 16 as Edmond was named the Track Athlete of the Week and Sykes the Field Athlete of the Week. On Mar. 19, Brenicke Johnson earned Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors while Michael Smith was recognized as the Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Upstate heads to Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend for the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by North Florida.
