Griffin Breaks School Record on First Day of ETSU Track & Field Invitational

Johnson City, Tenn. – Draneisha Griffin set a new school record in the triple jump to lead the USC Upstate track and field team during the first day of the ETSU Track & Field Invitational from the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center on the campus of East Tennessee State University.
The school record by Griffin highlighted a day which saw nine Upstate athletes attain new personal-best marks. Griffin finished 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 11.37-meters, also a personal-best, surpassing the previous record set by Destinie Sykes at ETSU's Niswonger Invitational last season.
The Spartan women logged six personal-bests and three top-10 performances on Friday. The six athletes that recorded new personal-bests were Meagan Bailey (60-meter hurdles), Adia Simpkins (60-meter hurdles), Semaj Tolliver (60-meter dash), Griffin, Sykes (triple jump) and KeAndrea Ladson (triple jump).
Brittany Walls turned in the top individual finish for the Upstate women as she placed 7th in the high jump after posting a leap of 1.63-meters. Jasmine Polite contributed a 10th-place finish in the 5000-meter run invitational following her time of 18:23.02, while Alexis Jacobs was 11th in the shot put (12.31-meters) and 13th in the weight throw (14.75-meters). Walls was also 12th in the shot put with her throw of 12.30-meters.
On the men's side, the Spartans compiled three personal-bests and one top-5 finish. Blake Hayes achieved a new personal-best in the weight throw, and Patrick Jamison and Jaleel Williams both surpassed their previous personal-bests in the 200-meter dash.
Griffin Eubanks continued his impressive start to the indoor campaign after finishing 5th in the 5000-meter run invitational with his time of 15:19.03 to lead the Upstate men. Hayes had the top throw in Flight 1 of the weight throw event and would go on to place 11th with a personal-best 13.93-meters.
The Spartans wrap up competition at the ETSU Track & Field Invitational Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m.
