
Cornfield Shoots Opening Round 70 Sunday at CSU Kiawah Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. – Ryan Cornfield posted a first round 70 to sit in a tie for fifth place and lead the USC Upstate men's golf team on Sunday at the CSU Kiawah Classic from the Turtle Point Golf Course.
Upstate turned in an opening round score of 299 and is 14th in the team standings following action on day one. A total of four strokes separate the Spartans from Jacksonville State and College of Charleston who are tied for ninth place.
Charleston Southern, the host team, holds a two stroke lead over Virginia and Augusta after carding a first round 287. R.J. Keur of Charleston Southern, Augusta's Robin Petersson and Nick Brediger of Radford are tied atop the individual standings after their rounds of 68 (-4).
Cornfield is in a four-way tie for fifth place after his 2-under score and is two strokes behind the leaders heading into round two action on Monday. The senior got off to a strong start over his opening nine holes with a 3-under 33 after birdies on three of his first five holes. He added to his birdie total on the back-nine at the par 4 2nd hole.
Trey Taylor is tied for 52nd after the first round as he finished with a 75 over his opening 18 holes. He contributed two birdies on the round coming at the 2nd and 18th holes.
Taylor White and Matt Carter are both tied for 71st as each had rounds of 77, combining for six birdies during the day. White carded birdies on the 2nd, 4th and 13th holes; while Carter had three birdies after his first nine holes on 10, 16 and 18.
Sebastian Lopez Bulla rounded out the team scoring for the Spartans with two birdies for a first round score of 79 and is tied for the 95th position.
Upstate will tee off its second round of the CSU Kiawah Classic beginning at 10:35 a.m. Monday morning.
