
Upstate Hosts NJIT in ASUN Opener

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team begins the ASUN portion of its 2016 season Saturday afternoon when the Spartans entertain the NJIT Highlanders at 1 p.m. inside the Hodge Center.
Upstate played in its seventh five-set match of the season on Tuesday evening as it defeated crosstown rival Wofford 3-2, moving its record to 7-9 on the season. The Spartans had three players record double-doubles during the win over Wofford in Callie Yeargin, Rebecca Shearer and Madison Haake. Haake has now recorded a double-double in each of her last eight matches. Emily Koelling set a new career-high against Wofford with eight blocks.
Upstate currently leads the nation in total digs, and is second in total attacks, 19th in assists, 20th in kills and 22nd in digs per set. The Spartans also top the conference in assists, service aces and digs.
NJIT heads into the league opener with an 8-7 overall record with wins this season over Saint Francis (Pa.), Morgan State, Fordham, St. Francis Brooklyn, Saint Peter's and Lafayette. The Highlanders are led by third-year head coach Peter Volkert.
Upstate and NJIT are meeting for the third time in program history. The Spartans swept the Highlanders in both meetings last season by identical 3-0 scores.

The Spartans remain at home on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when they host Presbyterian College at 6 p.m. in their non-conference finale.
