
Upstate Turns in Solid Opening Round of Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. – Pan Paksanont and Payton Culler carded rounds of 75 and 76, respectively, to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team after the opening round of the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Sunday from the Osprey Point Golf Club.
Upstate currently sits in 26th place out of 43 teams after shooting a first round 313, trailing SCAD – Savannah by one stroke and James Madison by two.
Paksanont and Culler are tied for 53rd and 66th places following their first round scores. Anna Chanthaphaeng is the third highest Spartan in the individual standings, tied for 95th, following her first round 78, while Sidney Dermody posted a score of 84 and is tied for 183rd. Caroline Heustess rounded out the day for Upstate tied for 211th position at 87.
Jacksonville leads the overall team standings after the first day by three strokes over College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina at 2-under 286. Individually, Jacksonville's Louise Persson and Saskia Sterud of St. John's are tied at 4-under with their rounds of 68.
NOTABLES
- The first round score of 313 was the lowest for the Spartans at the tournament since posting a 317 during the 2010-11 season.
- The field at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic this week is made up of 232 players.
- Paksanont led the Spartans with three birdies and posted her second round this season of 75 after closing out the season-opening CSU Fall Invitational with the same score.
- Culler, who also collected two birdies, turned in a score of 76 for the third straight tournament after having the same mark at the Winthrop Intercollegiate and Terrier Intercollegiate.
- Chanthaphaeng and Heustess each had one birdie in their round.
- The second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic tees off Monday morning at 9:15 a.m.
