Easton Cullison Fashions Career Day, Including First Career Homer, But Baseball Unable to Overcome High Point Sunday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Looking to close out Homecoming weekend with a sweep after securing a series victory Saturday afternoon, USC Upstate baseball was unable to overcome three four-plus run innings by visiting High Point in a 15-5 setback Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers got the scoring started with five runs in the second before adding a single run in the third and fourth while tacking on four runs in each the seventh and ninth. Upstate picked up a run in the home half of the second and added two runs apiece in the eighth and ninth, but even with the late runs, the Spartans were unable to overcome the early deficit.

At the plate, sophomore infielder Easton Cullison, who came on as a pinch hitter in the sixth, ended the game 1-for-2, hitting his first career home run with a solo shot in the eighth before securing his first career multi-RBI game with a sac fly in the ninth. Freshman catcher Jace Rinehart continued his hot streak at the dish, following up his 4-for-5 day Saturday with a 3-for-4 effort Sunday, collecting his second consecutive multi-hit game.

Scoring Summary
  • T2: Striking first for the first time in the weekend series, High Point used five straight hits to open the second to plate the first three runs of the game. The final two runs of the five-run inning came in behind a pair of sacrifice flies that sandwiched a hit-by-pitch.
  • B2: Stringing multiple hits together to open the home half of the second with Cameron MacIntosh, Jace Rinehart, and Noah Rabon collecting back-to-back-to-back singles with Rabon driving home MacIntosh with a single into center.
  • T3: Answering Upstate's run from the previous half-inning, the Panthers used another pair of singles to get back the run on their lead with Jackson Melton driving in the run.
  • T5: Setting the table with a leadoff double from Cole Singsank, High Point coupled a second hit and a squeeze play to plate another run.
  • T7: After opening the scoring in a four-run frame with an RBI double from Javon Fields, the Panthers took advantage of five walks, including two with the bases loaded, and a wild pitch to add the final three tallies of the inning.
  • B8: Following a leadoff triple from Rinehart, Jeff Taylor brought in Rinehart on a groundout to short before Easton Cullison hit his first career homer with a line shot over the wall down the rightfield line.
  • T9: In a similar fashion to how it scored its four runs in the seventh, High Point added four more runs in the ninth, taking advantage of another five walks, a wild pitch, and a two-run single from Fields.
  • B9: Seeing the first four batters in the inning reach base, Upstate scored its final two runs in the ninth thanks to a fielding error by the Panther pitcher with the bases loaded on a ball off the bat of Kyle Lehmann. Cullison brought home the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left.

Notable
  • With a drive to right in the eighth inning, Easton Cullison hit his first career homer Sunday afternoon. Adding a sacrifice fly in the ninth, he also secured his first career multi-RBI game—the only multi-RBI effort for the Spartans Sunday.
  • Following up his 4-for-5 day Saturday with a 3-for-4 game Sunday, Jace Rinehart earned his second career multi-hit game, doing so in consecutive games to close the High Point series.
  • Joining Rinehart with multi-hit games, Noah Myers and Cameron MacIntosh collected their 12th and 10th multi-hit efforts, respectively, of the year Sunday.
