Another Late-Inning Win Forces Doubleheader Split and Earns Baseball a Series Win Over James Madison

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing a doubleheader for the first time this season and the first time since last April, USC Upstate baseball entered the twin bill with a chance to win a weekend series, doing just that as the Spartans split its doubleheader with James Madison Saturday afternoon at Cleveland S. Harley Park, winning the series with a late-inning victory in game two.

The front end of the doubleheader saw a pitcher's duel as junior left-hander Henry Proger attempted to outduel James Madison's Ryan Murphy. Tossing 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and surrendering two runs, Proger earned his third quality start of the season, but, unfortunately, he took the tough-luck loss as Upstate plated just one run on four hits against Murphy. Out of the bullpen, sophomore righty Noah Sullivan pushed his scoreless streak to 16.1 innings, pitching 2.0 hitless and scoreless innings while striking out five.

In the back half of the twin bill, both sides saw an offensive uptick as the teams combined to pound out 22 hits and scored 15 combined runs after combining to score 14 total runs in games one and two of the series. The game also saw Upstate battle back to earn a late-inning victory as it was a four-run eighth inning that fueled the Spartan victory.

  • B2: After consecutive one-out singles from Daniel Gernon and Easton Cullison, Ty Tilson delivered Upstate the lead with a three-run homer to left—his first in a Spartan uniform. The Spartans added another run as Upstate loaded the bases following the home run before Noah Sullivan plated a run on a groundout to third.
  • B3: The Spartans added an additional insurance run after Sherrod led off the inning with a double. He was brought home with an RBI single into left from Jace Rinehart.
  • T4: James Madison got back a run on an RBI single from Coleman Calabrese, taking advantage of a passed ball that put Jacob Steinberg into scoring position.
  • T5: Pulling within a run in the fifth, the Dukes used RBI singles from Kyle Novak and Steinberg to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
  • T6: Driving a ball off the wall in the right-center gap, Fenwick Trimble gave James Madison the lead with a two-run triple to make it 6-5.
  • B8: Applying pressure to the Dukes' bullpen, the Spartans sent nine men to the plate in the inning as the first six reached base in a four-run frame. Troy Hamilton tied the game with a bases-loaded single into right before a walk with the bases juiced from Sullivan made it 7-6. Johnny Sweeney tacked on an additional run for Upstate with a sac fly to center before Sherrod added the final run with a single through the right side.

Notable
  • Playing a doubleheader Saturday, the doubleheader against James Madison marked the Spartans' first twin bill since April 30, 2022, versus Gardner-Webb. The doubleheader was the team's first due to weather since March 25, 2022, against Radford.
  • Earning a pair of multi-hit efforts in both ends of the doubleheader—the only Spartan to do so—Easton Cullison has recorded a hit in each of his starts this season. He concludes the James Madison series with a team-long four-game hitting streak, adding a hit in his lone at-bat versus South Carolina Wednesday.
  • Ending the day, Cole Caruso and Daniel Gernon's double-digit reached base streaks remain intact. Caruso's streak stands at 16 games while Gernon's sits at 15 games.
  • With his three-run homer in the second inning of game two Saturday, Ty Tilson hit his first career homer in an Upstate uniform. He is the third Upstate player to record his first Spartan home run this season, joining Gernon and Johnny Sweeney.
