Twenty-Plus Runs and Multiple Program Records Highlight Baseball's 22-4 Sunday Victory Over Princeton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Closing out the week with a rematch against Princeton, USC Upstate ended its week in a similar fashion to how it began, scoring 20-plus runs and scoring in each inning for the second time this week in a 22-4 victory over the Tigers Sunday at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

After falling late in yesterday's game against the Tigers, the Spartans wasted no time in scoring and scoring often, scoring thrice in the first inning. The frame marked one of five innings scoring three-plus runs as Upstate scored multiple runs in each inning from the first to the eighth. Upstate also scored in each of its trips to the plate against The Citadel Tuesday—the team's other 20-plus run game this season.

Leading to the program's fourth 20-plus run scoring game under head coach Mike McGuire, five Spartans recorded multi-RBI games with junior second baseman Easton Cullison, sophomore catcher Jace Rinehart, and redshirt sophomore designated hitter Ty Tilson each driving in three runs apiece. Upstate scored its 22 runs Saturday behind just 14 hits with four players registering multi-hit efforts.

Scoring Summary
  • B1: Starting off its first trip to the plate the same as Saturday's game, the first four hitters in the team's batting order reached base. The Spartans scored three runs behind an RBI single from Troy Hamilton, a run coming in as Grant Sherrod reached on an error, and an RBI groundout from Noah Rabon.
  • B2: In the second, Upstate added three runs without the benefit of a hit. Hamilton pushed across another run, drawing a bases-loaded walk before a second run scoring on a double-play with the bases loaded. The final run of the frame scored on a double steal with Daniel Gernon racing home.
  • B3: Two more runs crossed the plate for Upstate in the third with Cole Caruso driving home a run with a single to right-center before a second double steal led to a run.
  • B4: Stepping to the plate with two men on, Jace Rinehart doubled over the head of the rightfielder to push the advantage to double digits.
  • T5: Princeton got itself on the board in the fifth as Kyle Vinci hit a solo home run to left.
  • B5: Answering the solo shot, the Spartans posted their highest-scoring inning of the day, scoring four runs in the home half of the fifth. Upstate took advantage of four walks in the frame with a sac fly and a triple with the bases loaded from Easton Cullison and Ty Tilson, respectively, driving home runs.
  • B6: Cullison secured his multi-RBI game in the sixth as he followed up his sac fly in the fifth with a two-run double down the leftfield line.
  • T7: The Tigers added another three runs to their total with a three-run homer to right from Caden Shapiro.
  • B7: Loading the bases with a walk and two HBP, Upstate struck again in the seventh with three runs. Kyle Henington drove in the first with a single through the right side, Jake Armsey the second with a groundout to short, and the third scored via a wild pitch.
  • B8: The final three Spartan runs were scored in the eighth as Rinehart and Henington collected RBI singles and Tilson scored on a wild pitch.

Notable
  • Against Princeton, Upstate stole a school record eight bases, setting the school record for steals in a game for the second time under head coach Mike McGuire (2020-pres.). The Spartans' eight steals against the Tigers surpasses the team's seven steals against Longwood on April 23, 2021, for the school record.
  • Drawing 13 walks and getting hit by six pitches Sunday, Upstate collected 19 free bases, the most free bases in a single game under McGuire. The 13 walks are the most since drawing 11 versus High Point on May 7, 2021, with the six HBP the most since being hit six times against Gardner-Webb on April 20, 2022.
  • Being hit with three pitches, J.D. Brock tied a school record for times hit by a pitch in a game. He's the second Spartan, joining Noah Sullivan against The Citadel, to achieve the feat this season.
