CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Hitting the road for the first time in nine games, USC Upstate baseball remained resilient throughout the night, battling back from deficits on three occasions to take the game with a three-run outburst in the ninth in an 8-6 victory over Queens (N.C.) Tuesday.
Falling behind early as the Royals scored in the first and third, the Spartans didn't let the deficit deter them, fighting back to plate four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for the first time. Upstate withstood two runs in the sixth for Queens to tie the game and one for the Royals in the seventh to regain the lead by tying the game in the eighth. Queens took the lead back in the home half of the eighth inning, but the Spartans scored three in the ninth to take the lead for the final time and earn the win.
Leading to the victory, Upstate took advantage of a two-base error by the Queens reliever who tossed the ball out of play without calling time, putting the go-ahead run at third with one out. The Spartans went ahead with a sac fly from sophomore first baseman
Al Holguin before a double down the leftfield line from junior second baseman
Easton Cullison drove home an insurance run.
