SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A Spartan will compete at the track and field national championships for the first time in history as Channing Ferguson prepares for the high jump set for 8:30 P.M. ET Friday, June 9.
Event Preview
At this point in the season, only the best athletes in their respective events are still standing and the high jump is no exception as the competition ranges from top clears of 2.14M to 2.30M.
The top clear in the nation belongs to Oklahoma's Vernon Turner, who cleared that 2.30M during the Big 12 Championships. While Turner posted the top performance in the nation, he was unable to clear 2.17M during the West Prelims which shows how the event is up for grabs for any athlete competing.
All athletes competing cleared 2.09M during their preliminary rounds, with most, including Channing Ferguson, clearing 2.14M. Three athletes in the West Prelims (Caleb Snowden– Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Roberto Vilches – Missouri, Elias Gerald – USC) were the only ones to clear 2.17M. The East Prelims were cut off at 2.14 as they had already narrowed the field down to 12 athletes being sent to Nationals.
Ferguson's top clear this year of 2.16M has him in a three-way tie at 20th of the 24-athlete field in Austin.
Friday's Competition
The track and field national championships began Wednesday, but Ferguson won't compete until 8:30 P.M. ET this evening, Friday, June 9.
