Women's Soccer Heads to Charleston for 2026 Season Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A new era of USC Upstate women's soccer officially gets underway Sunday evening as the Spartans travel to Charleston to open the 2026 season against the College of Charleston. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
Sunday's contest marks the first regular-season match under first-year head coach Sam Odell, who takes over an Upstate program coming off another trip to the Big South Tournament in 2025. The Spartans and Cougars will meet for the fifth time in series history, with Charleston holding a 2-0-2 advantage.

Upstate and Charleston renew an in-state series that has produced draws in each of the last two meetings.
The teams most recently met on Sept. 4, 2024, in Spartanburg, battling to a 2-2 draw. Charleston carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime before the Spartans responded with two second-half goals to earn the result. The 2023 meeting also ended in a 2-2 draw, that time in Charleston. Overall, Charleston leads the all-time series 2-0-2, but neither side has been able to separate itself over the last two meetings.
Sunday's meeting will be the Spartans' first trip to Charleston since that 2023 draw.
For the Spartans, beginning the year away from County University Soccer Stadium is nothing new. Sunday's trip to Charleston continues a recent stretch of road contests to begin the regular season and provides an immediate test against an in-state opponent.
Upstate will look to turn its recent draws against Charleston into its first victory in the all-time series while also giving Odell his first win at the helm of the Spartans.
