GREENVILLE, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer erased a two-goal halftime deficit Thursday night, scoring twice in the second half to battle Furman to a 2-2 draw at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium. The result moves the Spartans to 3-2-2 on the season.
Furman jumped out to an early advantage behind a pair of goals from Norah Roller. Roller opened the scoring in the fifth minute off an assist from Bri Pinasco before finding the back of the net again less than two minutes later, giving the Paladins a 2-0 advantage just 6:07 into the match.
Despite Furman controlling much of the opening half and holding a 15-1 advantage in shots, goalkeeper Hannah Wilt helped keep the Spartans within striking distance. Wilt recorded six saves in the opening 45 minutes as Upstate entered halftime trailing by two.
The Spartans wasted little time changing the momentum after the break. Just 32 seconds into the second half, Jasmyn Mitchner found Giulia Altomare, who buried her first goal of the season to cut Furman's lead to 2-1.
Upstate continued to battle and eventually found the equalizer in the 78th minute. Liana Bryant set up Mitchner, who scored her fourth goal of the season at the 77:05 mark to pull the Spartans even at 2-2. The goal completed the comeback while giving Mitchner a three-point night with a goal and an assist.
The Spartans continued applying pressure following the equalizer, with Annabelle Wunderlich putting a shot on frame in the 83rd minute and Upstate earning back-to-back corner kicks. Furman generated several late chances of its own, but Wilt made another save in the 86th minute to help preserve the draw.
Wilt finished the night with eight saves while facing 19 Furman shots. Upstate finished with five shots, putting four on goal, and earned all four of its corner kicks in the second half. Bryant led the Spartans with two shots while adding the assist on the tying goal.
