Pendleton, S.C. - Jennifer Judge opened the Boscobel Invitational with a 79 as the low Spartan on the day as Upstate turned in a 335 to stand eighth heading into Sunday's final round.
The Boscobel Invitational is hosted by Wofford at the Boscobel Golf and Country Club, playing at 6,009 yards and par-72. The host Terriers lead the team standings by 12 shots after turning in a 304 Saturday. Gardner-Webb is second at 316 and is followed by Appalachian State (317), Mercer A (320), Presbyterian (322), Mercer B (325), Anderson (334) and Upstate.
"The round was a little disappointing," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "It seemed like it was one or two bad shots per person that made the difference in the scores. We worked on changing Marissa's (Clontz) grip last week, which is a big adjustment and thought we had made improvements. But, the one thing that was always steady with her, her short game, failed her today. Jennifer made the turn at one-over. She suffered a sprained ankle yesterday and battled through the injury today. There were three par-3's on the back and she missed the green on all three which hurt her score. Everyone kept the ball in play, but everyone missed shots and those accumulate fast."
Judge had three birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 1-over-par, but finished the round 6-over on the back nine to finish with the 79. Cheryl Lo turned in an 80 on the day. Johanna Ebenhag, returning to the lineup after a one-tournament absence, shot 86 as the third-lowest Spartan. Clontz battled her short game throughout the round and finished with a 90, while Natalie Buch added a 92 for Upstate.
"The players have already said they wanted to get to the course early tomorrow to work on chipping and putting," said Halkett. "They are not quitting and can't stand to be in last place. They have the mindset that they can play better and are ready to turn it around tomorrow."
